At start-up, the application provides an edition area with text
window, menubar at the top, scrollbar at the right side and
control-panel at the bottom (see figure §2.1 page 
).
If the pointer is inside the text window
(in X terminology this window has the focus), the characters
typed are inserted at the current position, which is the cursor
position. You can change the cursor position within the text with
keyboard commands or with a mouse left button click after moving
the pointer to the desired point.
