Textbook        à        Calculus by J. Stewart, 5th edition (2003); ISBN 0-534-27408-0.

This course provides an introduction to differential and integral calculus. Topics include limits, derivatives and integrals with their applications (Chapters 1 – 6 from the textbook; some sections will be skipped).

The course is NOT based on using calculators. They may be helpful when solving homework problems, but will NOT be ALLOWED when taking quizzes or exams.

Prerequisites              à        you should have one ‘algebra’ AND one ‘trigonometry’ prerequisite

from the table below (NOT all of them):

Algebra

Trigonometry

Either a score of 26 or higher on the ACT Math sub-test;

-------------------------------------------------

or a score of 26 or higher on the MMPT (Missouri Math Placement Test);

--------------------------------------------------

or a grade of C- or higher in Math 1030 (College Algebra).

Either a score of 7 or higher on the UMSL Trigonometry Placement Test;

------------------------------------------------------

or a grade of C- or higher in Math 1035 (Trigonometry).

If a record of your prerequisites is not in the UMSL computer system, you will be asked to provide verification by the end of the first week of the course.

Class meets     à       5 days a week: Monday through Friday at 9:30 – 10:20 pm

in 205 Clark Hall (section 1). Wednesdays will be in the MTLC.

Homework: The homework will not be graded; however, it is expected that you will have done the assignment and any assigned readings when you come to class. The list of homework problems is a suggested minimum. You are expected to spend 2 – 3 hours outside a class for every hour spent in the class. Please, evaluate your academic workload now. This is the first in a sequence of courses and the work habits you develop this semester will be crucial. I recommend that you form study groups to help each other with difficult concepts.

Quizzes: There will be 10 class quizzes and 4 home-taken quizzes (10 points each). Also, there will be a Review Quiz on the last day of classes (worth 20 points). Class quizzes are closed-textbook/notes; calculators are not allowed; they will cover the same material as homework problems. Answers with no work will not be given any points; only fully worked out solutions will be given partial/full credit. There will be NO make-up for quizzes.

Tests: There will be 4 tests and the mandatory comprehensive Final Exam. Dates of the exams are shown in the schedule. All exams will be closed books/notes, and calculators will not be allowed.

There will be NO tests dropped. Failure to appear for an exam will result in a grade 0 for that exam unless prior arrangements have been made. You will be allowed to take an exam at a different time (at the Assessment Center) ONLY in case of serious difficulties verified by some document (a doctor’s excuse, a copy of a police report, a letter from a supervisor etc.).

The final exam will be given on Wednesday, May 10, 12:15 – 3:15 pm (room to be announced).

Mastery Test: A mastery exam will be given before the second test (see the schedule). This exam will consist of very basic but essential differentiation problems. Of the 8 problems on the exam, you MUST do 7 ABSOLUTELY correctly. The exam can be retaken until “mastery” (the minimum skill level in differentiation) is achieved. You cannot get a grade of C- or better in Math 1800 unless you pass the mastery test by April 7 (regardless of your performance otherwise). The Mastery Test is NOT included into the grading scheme.

Grading scheme:        Quizzes                         à                    160 points;

                                    Four exams                   à                    540 points;

                                    Final Exam                    à                    300 points.

Letter grades in the end of the semester will be assigned according to the following scale:

Score

<600

600-699

700-799

800- 899

>=900

Grade

F

D

C range

B range

A range

The ranges include C-, C, C+, B-, B, B+, A-,A.

Grading in this course is not “on a curve”, so it is theoretically possible for every student in this course to receive an “A”, or everyone could receive an “F”.

MyGateway à  The MyGateway site will be used for posting grades, messages, keys, handouts etc (under ‘Course Documents’). Instructions to go to the iLrn website for online homework will be on MyGateway. Be sure to check this source as needed.

Math Lab à   in 425 SSB offers free tutoring during the day, evening and weekends. For more information call (314) 516-5190.

NOTE: If you decide to drop the course, make sure that you do it according to the UMSL regulations. It is important that a student not simply ceases attending class – an official withdrawal from the course is necessary to avoid an “F” grade.
