COURSE
DESCRIPTION: This course provides an introduction to
differential and integral calculus.
Topics include limits, derivatives, related rates,
TEXTBOOK: Calculus by James Stewart,
Brooks/Cole, Fifth edition, 2003.
PREREQUISITES: A score of 26 or higher on the ACT Math
sub-test and 7 or higher on the UMSL Trigonometry Placement Test, or a score of
26 or higher on the MMPT (Missouri Math Placement Test) and 7 or higher on the
UMSL Trigonometry Placement Test, or a grade of C- or higher in Math 1030
(College Algebra) and Math 1035 (Trigonometry).
If a record of the prerequisites is not in the UMSL computer system, you
will be asked to provide verification by the end of the first week of the
course.
EMAIL
REQUIREMENT:
All correspondence will be made through your UMSL
email account. You need to check this
email often.
HOMEWORK: Doing the homework problems
assigned is an essential element of success in this course. There are a lot of skills to be mastered this
semester the best way to grasp this material is to do LOTS of problems. Spending 2-3 hours outside of class for every
hour spent in class is expected.
Homework is collected at the start of the class period randomly and
counts as a quiz grade. You need to
bring all the homework for the given test period on the day of test. You lose 10 points on that test grade
otherwise. The section and the problems
should be clearly labeled.
QUIZZES: You
will have frequent quizzes on the topics of the previous 2 or3 days' classes;
some will be given in class and others will be take-home and due at the
beginning of class on the indicated date.
Each quiz will be worth 20 points.
No make up is given for the quizzes and your lowest grade will be
dropped.
TESTS: Four (4) exams, worth
100 points each, will be given during class on the dates specified on the
calendar. No exam will be dropped.
A make-up test will be given only in the case of a verifiable emergency
and only if you contact me prior to the test.
Written verification may be asked for.
Any make-up test will be more difficult than the test given in class.
FINAL EXAM: The mandatory Final Exam will be given on Friday, May 6,
9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. The final will be
comprehensive and worth 200 points.
Your
course grade cant be more than a letter grade higher than your final exam
grade.

MASTERY TEST:
A mastery exam will be given before the second test. This test consists of very basic
differentiation problems. Of the 8
problems on the exam, you must do 7 correctly.
The exam can be re-taken until mastery is achieved. Success on this test indicates a certain
minimal skill level. You cannot achieve
a grade of C or better in Math 1800 unless you pass the mastery exam by April
22 (regardless of your performance otherwise.)
MATH LAB: The Math Lab in 425 SSB offers free tutoring during the
day, evening, and weekends. Visit (http://www.cs.umsl.edu/lab/mathlab.html)
or call 516-5190 for more details.
MYGATEWAY (https://mygateway.umsl.edu/webapps/login):
You need to check Math 1800 common site
daily. Solutions to homework and
problems sessions, review for the tests, a copy of the syllabus, are among the
material that will be posted on this site.
A message will be posted in the announcements as soon as any new
material is posted on MYGATEWAY. The
closest computer lab is located in 103 SSB.
To assure that you have the correct copies, please print or view your
assignments from the machines on campus.
You should save the document to the computer before printing.
Calculators may be helpful when working
homework problems, but they will not be allowed when taking quizzes or exams.
