Title: Efficient and Automated Application Delivery with “HomeCloud” Using NFV and SDN Technologies
Abstract: There exists a mismatch between the current Internet’s point-to-point design and the one-to-multiple communication nature of application delivery, which creates problems impeding small- and medium-sized Application Service Providers (ASPs) from carrying out fast innovations. Smart home is a typical arena that such ASPs can find their roles for innovations. We believe that organically combining Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) technologies can address the major deficiency of the application delivery in today's Internet and open a new door for smart home innovations from the small- and medium-sized ASPs. In this talk, we start by a brief introduction of the latest trends in the mobile Internet and the basic motivations of the virtualization and cloud computing technologies. Then, we introduce the basic concepts of NFV and SDN, and the motivation of combining them to facilitate automated application delivery in our proposed "HomeCloud" framework. Preliminary designs of HomeCloud are discussed in details. We also present a proof-of-concept testbed to demonstrate the feasibility through an example Information-Centric Networking (ICN) application. In the future, we believe more applications involving edge cloud, such as Internet of Things (IoTs) and smart-home applications, can benefit from such a new framework.
