Title:  Quantum stabilizer codes from algebraic varieties

Abstract: In this talk we will present  an overview of  the construction of quantum stabilizer codes,
which are certain codes that can be used in a (still largely hypothetical) quantum computer, starting with
classical codes that are constructed from algebraic varieties.

We will give a leisurely survey of this area, starting with the construction of classical codes from the affine line
(the so called Reed-Solomon codes) and then from higher dimensional algebraic varieties. We will eventually
discuss residue codes constructed from toric varieties and their use in the construction of quantum stabilizer codes.
The latter is joint work with Reza Akhtar.
